Airbnb Moves in on Luxury Travel Market

Demonstrating its enthusiasm to tap into the luxury hospitality market, Airbnb has announced a new premium service, Airbnb Plus, as part of the company's 10th birthday celebrations. To qualify, hosts need to have a rating of at least 4.8 out of 5 and offer thoughtfully designed, well-maintained spaces (either a whole house/flat or room with private bathroom) and other services including wifi with over 5Mbps download speed, filtered water – and at least eight coat hangers.

With amenities similar to that of a hotel, there are currently 2,000 Airbnb Plus homes in 13 cities including London, Los Angeles, Rome, Shanghai and Melbourne. By the end of the year, the US company says 75,000 homes across more than 50 cities will be certified.

Airbnb has additionally announced that it will expand its Experiences service, whereby customers can sign up for local trips, be that surfing lessons in Malibu or truffle hunting in Tuscany.
