Misool Eco Resort Wins Tourism For Tomorrow Environment Award

The Misool Eco Resort located in Eastern Indonesia has been named winner of the WTTC 2017 Tourism for Tomorrow Environment Award, which celebrates world-changing tourism initiatives globally.

The resort helped set up a “no take zone” around the island, where all fishing, shark finning and harvesting of turtle eggs and shellfish are prohibited. Illegal fishing activity has been reduced by 86 per cent inside the area, and fish biomass has increased by more than 250 per cent in the last six years.

Meanwhile, research programmes such as the Misool Manta Project are monitoring the health of local marine populations, while community schemes include employment of local community members and the Lamakera Program, a five-year initiative to end the illegal hunting of mantas and sharks by providing alternative livelihoods to marginal communities.
