The Latest Luxury Travel from ILTM Asia

With expert-led forums, media conferences, a host of the world’s leading luxury travel exhibitors and some of Shanghai’s most exclusive travel industry after parties, the 10th edition of ILTM Asia, held in Shanghai, has helped to define luxury travel trends for the year ahead. ILTM Asia remains the leading luxury travel industry event for the industry to meet, with agents representing the highest net worth of individuals from 22 countries across Asia. JETSETTER’s editorial team was in attendance to get the low down on luxury travel for 2016/17.

“ILTM Asia is an event that has seen the beginnings of thousands of luxury travel adventures for thousands of luxury travellers from across Asia,” said Alison Gilmore, portfolio director for ILTM events. “Always on the cutting edge of the industry, it is right that during this landmark 10th year event, we celebrate 10 years of collaboration with a very special keynote speech on the growing power of the collaborative economy and the sweeping cultural and technological shifts informing Asia’s luxury travel landscape.”

Dedicated to the growing number of affluent travellers from across Asia, the show kicked off with its annual forum line up, which explored how digital technologies and the sharing economy are revolutionizing the behaviour of today’s Asian luxury traveller. Entrepreneur and writer Rachel Botsman, who originally defined the theory of ‘collaborative consumption’ in 2010, discussed resource-sharing platforms such as Airbnb and Uber and how they represent a generational shift in the way people access and consume goods and services.

“For the first time, we have a generation that trusts and takes risks in an entirely new way,” said Botsman.“They seek the experience of having continuing choice rather than ownership - this is a generation that sees their smart-phones as a remote control to the physical world.”

Following the ILTM Asia Opening Forum, luxury travel experiences from across the world met in one-to-one mutually matched appointments with almost 500 high-end travel agents from 21 countries across Asia, each specialising in creating and planning luxury travel for their high net worth clients.
