Wine Country Retreat

Boutique winery Oldenburg Vinyards, located in South Africa’s renowned Stellenbosch wine region, has transformed an original Cape Dutch family home into a luxury villa called The Homestead, offering guests the chance to enjoy farm stays on the property for the first time.

Tucked into scenic Banghoek Valley, The Homestead is a sophisticated, glamorous bolthole for oneophiles, foodies and design aficionados. Perfect for groups of friends or families, the property boasts six ensuite bedrooms, and guests can opt to enjoy the services of a dedicated butler, chef or driver. The 200-year-old homestead has been carefully restored and brought up to date, and marries indigenous Cape Dutch-style architecture with modern design. At the heart of the villa is a glass-walled wine cellar where the owner stores his personal wine collection, as well as a fully-equipped dine-in kitchen offering sweeping views of the surrounding mountains. On the ground floor, guests can feast in the formal dining room and relax by the open fireplaces in the living room, and enjoy a glass of wine while watching the sun dip over the horizon from the cosy verandah which overlooks the gardens. The outdoor entertainment area features a built-in barbecue and vineyard and mountain views, and is perfect for alfresco fun in the summer.

Most of the furniture and decorative items were sources from South African artisans to create a contemporary, elegant feel imbued with local flair; an earth colour palatte featuring neutral colours of white, grey and brown create a soothing atmosphere that’s the perfect backdrop for the owner’s eclectic collection of international art and antiques.

Away from The Homestead, visitors can experience wine tastings at Oldenburg’s cellar door, dine at award-winning restaurants, play golf, explore nature reserves, and visitor other wineries in Stellenbosch and the nearby wine region of Franschhoek.

The Homestead is priced from ZAR14,000 (US$1,185) per night, which includes a daily continental breakfast. A minimum three-night stay is required. www.oldenburgvineyards.com
