REVIEW: LKF’s New Hotspot

GayatriBhaumik checks out LanKwai Fong’s hottest opening and finds an unpretentious setting idea for people watching.
The brainchild of Solas’ CathalKiely, RulaBula is the slick new watering hole that occupies the former site of Likuid in LanKwai Fong. Catering to a more sophisticated crowd of young professionals than Likuid, the bar serves up quality cocktails and smooth beats amid décor that’s all exposed steel beams and understated furniture.
Early in the night, the large windows overlooking LanKwai Fong are a great place to enjoy a drink and a spot of people-watching. As the night wears on, a blind rolls down to cover the back window and the area near the DJ booth becomes a packed dance floor where patrons groove to a range of hip-hop, pop and house.
The drinks list has something for everyone with a range of wines, spirits, beers and cocktails. The signature cocktails are definitely worth a try, even for those who would normally avoid them. The eponymously named RulaBula, a cocktail of Bacardi rum, orange curacao and raspberry syrup is deliciously refreshing, while the Summer Breeze, made with Grey Goose vodka, Malibu, lychee liqueur and lime is a dangerously smooth combination of sweet and tangy notes. Also worth a sampling is the Jäger Ball, a different take on the popular Jägermeister and red bull shot.
The venue also hosts a range of weekly and monthly events. Trivia knowledge is tested at quiz nights on Wednesdays, while ladies get free flow of vodka on Thursday nights, and once a month, live stand up comedians have the crowd in stitches.
